The goal of the Common Core State Standards is to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
They were developed in partnership with the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, as well as the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Full implementation is scheduled for 2014-2015 school year. To date, 46 states have agreed to a set of voluntary K-12 state standards in English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics. Efforts are ongoing to establish future standards for science and social studies.
