The State's Paraprofessional Pay Policy continues to commit the General Assembly to bringing the state salary of paraprofessionals to 70% of the federal poverty level for a family of four within a four-year time frame. FY2014 represents the second year of that commitment.
On July 1, 2012, Governor Jack Markell recommended and the Joint Finance Committee voted 12-0 to compress the para salary scale from 26 steps to 10, and the General Assembly later made it official.
These efforts resulted in significant salary increases for paras, ranging from 4.18% to 12%, and the compression of the salary schedule from 26 steps to just 10 steps, which means paras would earn their highest level of pay earlier and for a longer duration of their career.
