DSEA President: 'This isn’t about saving money. This is about starving public schools...'

Gutting the U.S. Department of Education will send class sizes soaring, take away support for students with disabilities, and cut job training programs
Published: March 20, 2025

DOVER – DSEA President Stephanie Ingram, a 4th grade teacher in the Colonial School District, released the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s Executive Order to begin dismantling the U.S. Department of Education:

“This is a dark day in our nation’s history.

Rather than fighting to strengthen our public schools and support our communities, billionaires Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Linda McMahon are working to dismantle public education, strip vital resources away from Delaware families, and destroy programs that support vulnerable children here in the First State.

The reality is it’s Delaware students who will ultimately pay the price for Trump’s latest gift to his billionaire donors.

This executive order threatens to balloon class sizes by jeopardizing hundreds of educator positions in Delaware, while risking the future of critical programs that help 3 out of 5 students in Delaware learn reading and math – most of them students from low-income families and children with disabilities.

This isn’t about saving money. This is about starving public schools of the resources our students need – and their families depend on – so the Trump Administration can funnel our tax dollars to corporate profiteers and deliver tax cuts to the wealthiest 1%.

The reality is it’s Delaware students who will ultimately pay the price for Trump’s latest gift to his billionaire donors.”
